Fire and Seasons Calendars with Indigenous Communities

2014 onwards

Working collaboratively with various Indigenous communities to co-develop seasonal calendars to guide cultural fire management. We have won several awards for our work, including the Ecological Society of Australia national award for ‘Right-way Science’ in 2019 and 2020, and CSIRO Award for Indigenous Engagement in 2017.

Co-authored with Kamilaroi Elder Harry White, this book on traditional Aboriginal plant use in the Northern Tablelands and North West of NSW is a best-seller.

Natural Resources Commission: Aboriginal cultural values and renewal assessment in NSW forests post-wildfires – Banbai Case Study


The Banbai Rangers are leading NRC-funded Aboriginal values assessments on the Wattleridge Indigenous Protected Area and other tenures in northern NSW after the 2019/20 wildfires, with Melaleuca Environmental subcontracted to undertake project coordination and specialist services.
